The Story of the Andy Sturmer Demos

Monday, August 21, 2000

I recently came across a promo CDR called "Andy Sturmer Songs" that was manufactured by Andy's publishing company.

Here is what I know so far -- the CD was sent out by EMI Music Publishing to various film and television studios to promote Andy's songwriting and to hopefully prompt a studio to license some of Andy's songs. The CD has 10 tracks on it -- six of which are previously released Jellyfish songs and one of which is a previously released Ringo Starr song w/ Andy & Roger. But as far as I know, the other three tracks are brand new previously unreleased songs.

Here is the track listing:

Andy Sturmer Songs

1. Two Months Tuesday (Andy Sturmer Solo?)
2. Our Last Goodbye (Andy Sturmer Solo?)
3. I Don't Believe You (Ringo Starr w/ Andy & Roger)
4. The Man I Used To Be (Jellyfish)
5. That Is Why (Jellyfish)
6. I Wanna Stay Home (Jellyfish)
7. Bedspring Kiss (Jellyfish)
8. The Glutton Of Sympathy (Jellyfish)
9. Baby's Coming Back (Jellyfish)
10. Sweet Wingless Angel (Andy Sturmer Solo?)

I added all the info in parentheses. On the CD, it doesn't attribute the tracks to anyone, it just lists the song titles.

Now, after going to BMI and searching through their database, I came up with the following songwriting credits for the three new songs:

"Two Months Tuesday" BMI Work #4888035 - Writers: Brady Seals & Andy Sturmer.
"Our Last Goodbye" BMI Work #4098645 - Writers: Tamio Okuda & Andy Sturmer.
"Sweet Wingless Angel" BMI Work #4887847 - Writers: Andy Sturmer.

So, the big question is -- Is it Andy singing and/or playing instruments on these three new songs or did he just write them and it is actually someone else singing and/or playing instruments? Well, I can't answer that question with 100% accuracy. All three songs do feature a male lead singer, but there are no liner notes on this CDR and no one has been able to offer up any definitive information on these songs.

The first song "Two Months Tuesday" sounds very much like a country song and the co-writer Brady Seals is a country singer. There are times during the song when I figure it could be Andy and then there are other times when the singer just sounds too twangy. So, is it actually Brady singing this song or Andy trying something different? I don't know. The second song "Our Last Goodbye" sounds less twangy and more like it could be Andy, but I'm still not sure. The third song "Sweet Wingless Angel" is definitely Andy singing -- there is no question about it.

Anyway, listen to the snippets of the three songs below and let me know what you think. Also, if anyone has any additional information on this CD or these three new songs, feel free to email me.

Thanks!

My Initial Email

Monday, August 21, 2000

I was at my local used CD store this morning and I saw something that knocked me for a loop -- sitting in the bin in front of me was a new promo CD called "Andy Sturmer Songs"! I was so excited, I snapped it right up without even checking it out -- I just ran up to the counter and bought it as quickly as I could for fear that someone might take it away from me. Then when the guy rang me up, he only charged me $0.99 for it! Can you believe it?!

Anyway, the CD has 10 tracks on it -- six of which are Jellyfish songs and one of which is a Ringo Starr song, but three tracks seem to be brand new songs by Andy! The disc is actually a CDR and not a regularly pressed CD and it says it was put out by EMI Music Publishing and is copyright 1999 Magically Delicious Music. Has anyone else ever heard of this CD before?! I feel like I have found something really cool and rare here!

This is the track listing:

Andy Sturmer Songs

2. Our Last Goodbye (Andy Sturmer Solo?)
3. I Don't Believe You (Ringo Starr w/ Andy & Roger)

8. The Glutton Of Sympathy (Jellyfish)
9. Baby's Coming Back (Jellyfish)
10. Sweet Wingless Angel (Andy Sturmer Solo?)

I added all the info in parentheses. On the CD, it doesn't attribute the tracks to anyone, it just lists the song titles.

That's all for now -- I've got to run and play the CD some more!
